Preventative Care

The dentist, the hygienist and the patient all work together to help patients maintain a healthy mouth.  They work to prevent the need for treatment.  The main cause for tooth loss is decay and gum disease.

First they hygienist will scale and polish your teeth.  They will show you the best ways to brush and clean in between your teeth with floss to remove bacterial plaque.  Plaque needs to be removed regularly so it doesn’t become tartar, cause tooth decay or issues with your gums.  You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day.  Be sure to slide the floss down on each side of your tooth, going under the gum line.  Improvements to your diet and quitting smoking can also help to protect your teeth.  Limit sugary foods or drinks.  Chewing sugar free gum may also help.

Sealants that provide a long, lasting protective layer on the biting surface can be applied.  Be sure to visit your hygienist at least once every six months.
